Felicitas Guillen was enrolled into the program as a seasonal farmworker with agriculture related work history picking tobacco. At the time of enrollment, she was living with her mother in a small house located in a rural area in Ruffin, SC. She is a high school graduate from Colleton High School with the dream of becoming a Certified Medical Assistant. After reviewing her application and providing a program orientation, Felicitas was determined eligible for employment and training services.
Felicitas barriers to employment were transportation and lack of work experience other than farm work. Felicitas and her family members shared a vehicle to and from work.
After completing the O*NET assessment, Felicitas also TABE and Work keys tested with the SC Works Adult Education Program. Felicitas scored high on both. While conducting a research of career interest, we discovered that she was not eligible for FAFSA. Felicitas received orientation from the Technical College of the Low Country – Hampton Site. On February 2nd, 2015, she started classroom training at Technical College of the Low Country. On March 13th, 2015, she completed training and became a Certified Nurse Aide.
After becoming a Certified Nurse Aide, Felicitas participated in a work experience activity. She also participated in Job Readiness Work Shops offered by the SC Works. These workshops included: Job development, Resume writing, Working etiquette and Employers Expectations. Felicitas also received on -the job- training at Valcourt Pediatrics Associates. After the completion of on- the job- training, she was hired as a Medical Office Assistant at $9.00/hour. Felicitas learned transferrable skills that helped her made a transition to Health First Urgent Care.
Felicitas has been hired by Health First Urgent Care as a Medical Assistant making $12.00, per hour. All retention and wages have been captured and her supervisor states that Felicitas is doing great. She recently moved to her own apartment and is saving money to purchase a home in the near future.
